MENOPAUSE AND ESTROGEN REPLACEMENT

What is the Menopause?

The menopause is the age when menstruation stops in women.

Why is the Menopause important?

The menopause marks the cessation of ovarian function and the loss of production of the female hormone ‘oestrogen’. The average age of the menopause in the UK is 51 years.

What can go wrong after the Menopause?

The menopausal years can present peculiar challenges due to altered body hormones and tissue consistency with often profound consequences. These need to be addressed sensitively and efficiently. Common menopausal dysfunctions include:

  • Hormonal dysfunction – hot flushes, irritability
  • Cognitive dysfunction – sleep dysfunction, poor memory, psychological disturbances
  • Bleeding dysfunction – heavy, prolonged and/or irregular uterine bleeding
  • Urinary dysfunction – urinary frequency, urgency, leakage (incontinence)
  • Prolapse – genital weakness and prolapse
  • Pelvic masses – Fibroids, Adenomyosis, Ovarian cysts

Estrogen (Hormone) Replacement Therapy (HRT)?

Hot flushes due to lack of estrogens are the commonest problem of the menopause. This condition, and others due to estrogen lack, can be corrected by replacing estrogen through medicinal or natural products. Estrogen therapy might take the form of estrogen-only or estrogen-progesterone therapy depending on the woman’s circumstances. These can be administered orally (by mouth), topically (through the skin), intra-cavitary (vaginally) or intra-corporeally (insertion into the body).
